Consistent with trends throughout the world, Hawaii is becoming more efficient in its use of fossil fuels. As shown in the chart below, Hawaii has been using decreasing amounts of imported fuels per person (including residents and visitors) in all sectors.

The recent dramatic declines in fuel use starting in 2008 are primarily due to marked increases in oil prices and Hawaii’s economic recession.
